Days 4&5, Southampton and Winchester Bridge, January 8, 2025January 9, 2025 Hey folks, we didn’t post anything on Monday because basically all we did was shop and walk. I now have officially too much stuff to put in either of my large suitcases so am going to need another bag!! 🙄 Yesterday we went up to Winchester on the train (a very short 15 minute journey), where we visited the Great Hall, built by Henry III between 1222 and 1235, and containing a replica of Arthur’s legendary round table. A replica of something that probably never existed… hmmm… bit difficult to get overly excited about it to be honest! Of note, Walter Raleigh was tried and sentenced to death here in 1603 for his part in plotting to overthrow James I, although he was subsequently given a reprieve and sent to the Tower of London for the next 13 years). Next we skipped down the road to the cathedral which curiously has no steeple. You history buffs will know that Winchester was the capital of England back in the 9th century and building on the cathedral began in 1079. It contains the tomb of Jane Austen, a 12th century font, the 900 year old Winchester Bible and numerous other incredible artefacts, relics and architecture. The excellent cafe next door provided a well deserved sit down and refreshments afterwards. Later we met my lovely cousin Melissa and her husband Steve for dinner at The Ivy, Winchester, which was very enjoyable indeed! ☺️ Daily Posts
