Today we arrived in Ushuaia, Argentina, the world’s most southerly city. Ushuaia is the embarkation point for most voyages to the Antarctic and indeed there were several expedition ships in port today. It was a bitingly cold 2 degrees when we arrived but warmed up to around 4 degrees for about 5 minutes mid-morning. Ushuaia is known as ‘The End of the World City’. It is surrounded by the dramatic Marshall Mountains and is reached by sea via the Beagle Channel.
After breakfast we jumped on a coach for a scenic drive through the dramatic mountain landscapes as far as the Garibaldi Pass and Lake Escondido, after which we stopped off at a mountain restaurant for pastries and empanadas, none of which we could eat because there was nothing gluten free. After this we returned to Ushuaia where we had a mooch around the very overpriced shops before returning to the ship. Ushuaia has a slightly odd, frontier town vibe, but Tierra del Fuego national park is truly stunning.
